3. The Capital Changes in 1960
A major event in Brazil's history was the changing of capitals from Rio de Janeiro to Brasilia in 1960. Rio de Janeiro became the capital of Brazil in 1808 when Portugal was a part of Brazil and the royal Portuguese family moved to Brazil. Then when Brazil became independent from Portugal in 1822, the Brazilian empire began again as a monarchy and then became a republic in 1889. Brasilia became the country's new capital in 1960 when President Juscelino Kubitschek decided it would be the new capital of the federal republic of Brazil. This was a major event in Brazil's history because having Brasilia as the capital was meant to push for a more centered country. The government wanted to centralize Brazil away from the coastal cities so that the middle of the country could flourish as well and be developed. Lastly, Brasilia was more ideal as the capital than Rio de Janeiro because it was more centrally located within Brazil.
